Edwin P. Clarity was born on January 28th, 1890, in Boston, Massachusetts to Peter and Alice Clarity. He moved to Portland, Maine with his mother and siblings in the 1890s after his father’s death in 1892. In 1917, Edwin was conscripted into the U.S. Army and served at Camp Devens in the 151st Depot Brigade which trained and discharged soldiers to and from the war. He quickly rose to the rank of Battalion Sergeant Major and was discharged from service on December 9th, 1918. Tragically, he lost his brother Thomas Clarity in 1918 to the Spanish Flu in Massachusetts where he was enlisted as a U.S. Navy Sailor. After the war, he served as a clerk and accountant at the Boston and Maine Railroad Company until his retirement in 1956. He married Agatha M. Carey on October 21st, 1940. Edwin and Agatha moved into 39 Exeter Street in 1953 and remained until his death on January 24th, 1970.
